Perfect for smaller rooms

Review Date: June 13, 2003
Reviewer: ,
I decided to take a chance with the Samsung and save a lot of money. I also doubt I'll be in my small condo for more than a few years so why spend $900 on something I'll probably want to replace in a few years anyway.
Positives: The sound is great with plenty of thump from the sub, satellites look good, DVDs look amazing on my Sony HDTV and the 5-disc changer comes in handy with a NetFlix account. I replaced a nice Sony system with this and the sound is just as good. I have a 12x12 living room with hardwoods and I have had to turn it up higher than my old STR component but I have never needed more than 75%.
Negatives: The unit did overheat after about 2 hours of watching the first movie so I just cut a larger hole in the cardboard in the back of my TV stand and haven't had a problem since. The blue light around the volume is annoying if you want to watch a movie with all the lights off but the remote has a dimmer button where you can turn down the intensity of the light or off completely. My only complaint about this is that it always turns on with the light on full intensity no matter what state it was in when you turned off the receiver. My biggest complaint is the connectors you must use to connect the speakers to the receiver. I already had Monster Cable run so I just stripped and crimped the wires just before the connector but I would have much rather just run my wires directly into the receiver.
Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to get a great product at a great price for a small to medium sized room. The cost savings are well worth the few complaints I have above and I'm not even sure I'll try to replace it if I move into a larger place. A true audiophile may be able to point out negatives in the sound quality but I haven't heard anything that I didn't like.

I bought this item for a week now and I love it, used to have a Kenwood and returned because it was too bulky and it overheated to much. The Samsung has way more EQ settings to create different sounds effects you can even put your favorite JPG foto or movie still as a wallpaper when the disks are loading. The remote is nice it controls your TV's power and volume and channels, it has programmable FM/AM radio stations, and the built in fan keeps the unit cool. The speaker are great too for being 3 1/2" deep and the gray on crome is especially nice, there is also plenty of speaker cable to reach all the speakers in the room. My living room door rattles with the 100w bass the subwoofer provides, The sound from all 6 speakers is really awesome. The only bad thing is that it is about 17" deep with the fan and I have to cut out an opening on the back of my entertainment center for it to fit properly. Other than that I highly recommend it without a doubt. 5 stars
Very cool system at a great Price!

I have had this system for a couple weeks now and am loving it!
This was a very easy hookup, I didnt even have to read the directions. The sound is amazing, the picture is amazing and the price/performance ratio is amazing! There are 2 things that the reviewer before mne had said, 1 I do agree with, the other I do not. There is infact a fast forward feature! You have to hold the chapter skip button down!!! I do agree that the remote not have a glow feature is annoying, considering I watch the movies in the dark.

I got this @ Best Buy when it first came out. I was looking @ a sony but they didn't have speaker wires with it(open box item) and I asked the guy @ Circuit City if he could call Sony and find out how I could get them and how much it would cost me. It was 55mins later and the guy was pissed. He waited that long to find out that Sony was going to charge me as much for the wires as he was charhing me for the system! (Sony had special speaker wires)
Anyway I booked it to Best Buy and there it was the HT-DB600. I was impressed with the design and it was easy to use @ the store. I looked @ the other systems but they all cost more. It had the same watts as the other ones too. I got it and was eager to hook it up.
I took it out of the box and looked @ the instructions and I was done putting it together in about one hr. Like I said I never hooked up something like this but it was real easy. I have an HD tv and Xbox with all the stuff to make it HD and a sony VCR and A HD samsung direct tv reciever. It was pretty easy to get all hooked up to the surround system and everything had sound.
I have not had any problems with it scratching up discs or dvds or taking to long to load.(a sony playstation 2 takes longer to load) I've had this for 2 years now.
I got used to the remote for it but it didn't work with my tv so i just got a universal remote.( make sure when you get a universal remote you put all options the old one had otherwise you'll be even more frusterated)
Overall this is a pretty cool system. I live in an apartment so I can't have too much power but I still piss off the neighbors. It looks cool on the outside and it's not too tall so it can fit inside your entertainment center if you have one.
You can also save pictures on it so when you are waiting for it to load, you have a picture you can look at. I thought that was pretty cool.
I would recomend this to all who first start out and want to pay less for something that they can use for a while and understand how everything works. I'll be going back to Samsung to get more products in the future.

This is my first Home theatre system so I can't really make a justified comparison with other system but as far as I can hear, the sound quality are very good, the thumping of the bass mixed very well with the satellites... the additional features, including Dolby Pro Logic 2 that are still rare in this price range, are exceptional... I don't know why people are complaining about the remote control, I think the button are intuitively placed and if you're like most people that 90% used your rc to change channel and access menu, chances are in a month or so you'd remember where the buttons are (and this also eliminates the complaint that says there are no control button on the DVD/Receiver it self... let's be honest nobody really get out of their couch to tamper with those button... very few of us do)

Now the bad... the sound output IS limited to headphone plug... And all the bad reviews that this system got... In all the sites that contains this system's review almost 50% complaint about faults within the first warranty year... and the fact that you can't find ANY information on this system on Samsung website is a definite sign that this system IS troublesome (It's a new system, while samsung has some older system still being supported on their site)... Luckily so far I have no problem at all with my system

So I guess when you decide to buy this system, even though it is a very good one for the price, in the end you really have to ask yourself if you're feeling lucky :-)

28 Mar 10 Satellite TV And Your Home Theater System

If you have your home theater system through a high-definition television (HDTV), then want to get the best digital images available. If you are DVDs you want to get the latest generation of DVDs – HD DVD or Blu Ray. If you just watch TV, you want satellite TV, since this is the only source for HDTV at the moment. This article discusses the benefits of satellite TV to discuss the home theater owners.

The two main providers of digitalSatellite (DSS) are DirecTV and Dish Network. At this time, these networks broadcast their programs digitally, but only a few channels of digital images. This is still better than the standard analog signal, the signal does not suffer because of disturbances. Of course, the guardians of the TV is the most important feature to obtain digital images. I think this will change as more people and more HDTV programming available to producers are beginning to create high-definition programs. At this stageBut if you want, all digital television, satellite services are the only way to go.

The main advantages of digital satellite service is that you get a great diversity and variety of entertainment options available. This includes the latest movies and sports events, local television and specialist interest channels.

A DSS system is far simpler to manage than a traditional video recorder or even a digital video recorder, because it comes with a TV guide. The TV Guide issynchronized with the programming so when the program starts late or delayed the leadership changes. So you'll never miss your favorite program.

In addition to the hundreds of channels you will be many audio channels, the function of mainstream radio stations and even obscure or ethnic language stations. You can play these audio channels through your home theater speakers to get the best sound quality.

The main disadvantage of satellite TV was that you hadInstall a sometimes ugly looking dish on your homepage. This is not really the case, as the Court significantly smaller in size. The satellite companies are making it as easy as possible to fit into the shell, or it will fit free of charge in some cases.

Satellite TV can bring true digital television to your home entertainment system. If you have an HDTV, then you want to buy in a position to receive digital image quality, for such a DSS is the best choice.

Product Description

The Bose Lifestyle 50 listening system was designed to replace the appearance of a rack of conventional audio components with its palm-sized wireless Personal music center remote control, which is smaller than a videocassette. The system has other components, of course, but most are meant to be hidden from view. Tiny Jewel Cube speakers no bigger than a computer mouse replace room-filling loudspeaker cabinets, blending elegantly with any decor. A hideaway Acoustimass module (subwoofer) delivers full, deep bass for movies and music. The rest of the system--including AM/FM tuner, a full-function 6-CD changer, and the cables and connections for up to 4 rooms--can be easily tucked out of sight.

The Acoustimass bass module uses a technology that launches sound on a column of air rather than directly pushing air with a vibrating cone. It delivers full, natural bass sound without distortion--all from a compact enclosure, which can be located anywhere in your room (perhaps behind a curtain or under a coffee table). This means you'll enjoy the same quality of sound wherever you're standing or sitting.

The award-winning Jewel Cube speakers are the most visible components. The product of more than 40 different innovations and technologies, these speakers are about the size of a computer mouse, yet they're capable of filling a room with rich, lifelike sound. Their patented signal-processing technology automatically adjusts their tonal balance, ensuring your audio programs always will exhibit full, deep bass and clear, natural vocals at any listening level.

The touch-screen Personal music center, the heart of the system, communicates through radio frequencies, unlike infrared, sight-line dependent conventional remotes--so you don't have to aim it at other equipment for its commands to work. The remote's intelligent simplicity uses layered touch-screen menus to indicate and control functions such as radio tuning (with 50 station presets), track programming (up to 50 tracks in one sequence), volume adjustments, source selection, etc.

The Personal music center can control powered speakers positioned in different rooms (additional-room speakers not included). Or, with the purchase of additional Personal music centers, multiple users can simultaneously operate up to 4 different music sources--say, a CD player in the living room, a television set in a bedroom, an AM/FM player at the patio. For multiroom listening, Bose recommends its Virtually Invisible 191, 161, Acoustimass 5, or Acoustimass 3 speaker systems.

The Lifestyle 50 is also equipped with a digital signal processor called Videostage 5, which heightens surround-sound realism for both movie soundtracks and music recordings. The Videostage decoder processes analog formats--as well as 2- or even single-channel PCM and Dolby Digital bitstreams--and helps to deliver movie-theater excitement right in your home.

A feature called Digital Dynamic Range (DDR) compression automatically monitors and adjusts the system's level to let you to hear soft sounds, particularly dialogue, while preventing you from being overwhelmed by loud special effects. This is especially useful for late-night viewing, freeing you from having to constantly adjust the volume.

Dolby Digital decoding delivers up to 5.1 discrete audio channels (that is, 5 for the independent Jewel Cube speakers and 1 for rich bass from the Acoustimass, or subwoofer module) from DVD, digital TV, advanced cable boxes, and digital satellite receivers.

What's in the Box
Personal music center, a CD changer, a multiroom interface, an interface power pack, 5 Jewel Cube speakers, 5 speaker cables, 1 Acoustimass module (subwoofer), an AC power cord, 14 self-adhesive rubber feet (4 for the module and 5 pairs for the Jewel Cube speakers), an audio input cable, a CD changer cable, a stereo cable, 4 AAA batteries, an FM antenna, an AM loop antenna, an AM antenna base, a CD magazine, a Lifestyle system CD, and a test CD.

25 Mar 10 The History Behind the Plasma TV

Looking at the history of the plasma screens, you need to understand the story behind this remarkable invention. The first plasma screen television has come a very long way. However, the reason for the invention was not only to men seen with amazing sport.

The plasma TV developed as a result of the computer generation. It is unbelievable that this device is not just based on a new idea. It noted that after some time. Maybe a little bitHistory lesson is for you to understand how this application came to stand for the masses available.

It all started in 1964 at the University of Illinois. At that time, computer monitors were simple TV. They have recognized that the televisions at this time were cathode ray tubes. They had to constantly refresh to display properly.

That was a big problem when you watch a TV as a computer. Sure that it comes to TV shows in order, but theResolution for computers was terrible. By the end of the first plasma monitor was in operation.

Today's plasma TVs have millions of cells that comprise the color and resolution of the screen. The first plasma monitor was only one cell. However, it was still a step in the right direction.

It was a setback, but. Liquid crystal displays has been the acceptance of this method and technology has been put on hold. Fast forward a few years and flat screen televisionsits popularity.

Plasma TV has a huge influence on how people watch television, and made use of their computer. HDTV is a very popular product, as evident by the sheer number of plasma screens in retail stores.

The price, if a major problem with how expensive they were, now it is always very favorable. There are a large number of people who, even now, this strange flat-screen TVs.

The world owes the scientists At the University of Illinoisvery big thank you. Had it not been for her need for a new computer monitor, the world can never have seen a plasma TV.

The large screen television sets would still be the TV choice and a clear picture would be a dream instead been the reality. These scientists have now people all over the world can enjoy great TV at an attractive price.

22 Mar 10 Do You Need A Motion Simulator For Your Home Theater System

So you have to buy the best picture money can buy. They have a large screen. You have Dolby Digital surround sound. What could you possibly need to make a better movie experience and you will get more involved in the action. The answer is: You need a motion simulator, synchronized with the action on screen.

As long as cinema has been developing people and tries to sophisticated methods, the boundary between the screen and it's audience to be bridged. Sound was the first innovation. Sincethen we have imagined, but never quite implemented so spattered bizarre ideas like "smellovision 'or water, or blowing gusts of air at the audience to add a" look and feel' type of quality films.

If you have ever been to a theme park, you'll know that the ultimate effect Add to movies is to move. Popular rides like the Space Shuttle Simulator combined synchronized movement with footage of a space shuttle flight. The sensation is that you're really on board the ship and experience allIntestinal tearing g-forces. You feel like you are really there.

Well, the feeling is now possible in the comfort of your home. Home theater systems commonly used bass shakers to create a sense of movement for the viewer. At the low bass notes rattle or shake the subwoofer to give the impression of participating in the project. This worked to a limited extent, but has evolved since the early home theater.

Meanwhile, there are devices thatpick up the bass notes and control actuators that a seat may travel within the noise of the base. These types of devices range from simple devices that is based behind the sofa, lift or rock the couch, hearing the noise, really high end motion simulators that actors have adapted in your favorite chair, chair or sofa place.

The more sophisticated systems have hundreds of different movements. In some cases, the movements are unique to a particular film. TheMaker of the motion simulators and watch the film and then program in a movement on the action and the tone. They create new "movement" software for every month the latest DVD offerings, which to you or invite you have sent.

These movements do car chases, plane crashes and other action sequences come to life. It feels as one with a passenger train ride in the back seat are.

As some of this technology can imagine, it can be quite expensive, but if you want the bestpossible movie experience try a motion simulator at some point.

20 Mar 10 Five Formats Of DVD Technology

Music consumers in a new era in the 1980s, when she first introduced in the digital medium of CDs. On the film side at home were the consumers to the VHS, ie glued Video Home System, Volume until the 1980s. This was also non-digital, but gradually replaced by CDs, the digital VHS in the late 1980s.

Film companies were not happy with the CDs that were available and worked for various digital video formats into a product that would give improved visual developmentand audio quality on the homepage of the consumer. The result was the development of the DVD. The DVD technology in the early 1990s and was immediately entertainment such as Time Warner and Sony realized and agreed to promote the new, high-quality technology.

DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc, although it is popularly known as digital video disc due to popularity in the video industry. The main reason for the popularity and growth of DVD is that DVD technology allowsstoring a large amount of data using digital technology.

In this moment, DVD provides over 480 lines of resolution that is twice that of the 20 lines of the VHS format. The 480 lines at best to a progressive DVD player to see the 40 to convert interlaced video into a line 480 progressive format. The progressive display has a 31.5 kHz or higher scan rate. This means that all traces of the scan delay accounts and offers a TV screen.

DVD technology is very different from the CD, includingalthough they are very similar in appearance. A DVD consists of a thin, circular wafers made of clear plastic and metal measuring 4.75 "in diameter with a small hole made in the middle. The thickness is 0.2 inch and two such discs are compressed to a double-sided disc 0.04 inches thick.

The digital data, which consists of the binary language of ones and zeros, is on a master CD and the master disc is coded then used to create self-copies. The deal is done by burning smallHoles, called pits, in a microscopic layer of metal, usually aluminum, with the help of a laser. These mines are the binary ones. Binary zeros are the smooth surface of the layer of metal that has not been affected by the metal binary zeros. Then the metal is coated with a protective transparent layer.

Five physical formats used in DVD technology

DVD-ROM

It stores general data, and video and audio information for multimedia applications and computer requiredGames.

DVD

One of the reasons for the success of DVD technology is the DVD-Video format. The DVD-Video application is heavily dependent on data compression, since the bit rate of 167Mbps, the 4 GB storage capacity of a standard DVD would be enough to approximately 4 minutes digital video library. This provides the nominal 133 minutes playing time for DVD-5.

The DVD-9, the dual-layer-use technology that is ideal for longer movies. In this case, the data starts on the first layer onthe inside of the disc and end on the outside. The data on the second layer on the outside begins and ends on the inside thus provides continuous playback.

18 Mar 10 HDTV Installation

The decisions needed with HDTV are more complex than those that were necessary with the former technique. It is important to correct this information, or get our entertainment system, will be called into question.

Video Module

An ideal size is considered to have HDTV distance from the viewer on the screen that is about 2-3 times the width of the screen. Choosing the right size screen is one of the most important decisions when buying a new HDTV.

Most consumers say that theywant a wall-mounted HDTV. Say, however, according to the NPD Group, consumer and retail market research information company (NPD.com), only 13 percent of the current LCD TV owners and 25 percent of plasma TV owners installed their unit on the wall.

"Consumers are flat-panel technologies for wall-mounting capabilities drawn, but the difficulty of such a system often leads to explore alternatives such as standing or intermediary facilities." said Ross Rubin, director of theIndustry analysis, The NPD Group.

It is tempting to delegate the decision-making to a local vendor. This is not wise. Studies show that many of the seller at your retailer not as knowledgeable or neutral, as we hope so. For example, one study found that 37% of the sales team shunned Customer plasma HDTV systems because of the "in the plasma display was burning" when burning eliminated as a problem several years ago (JD Power and Associates). The studyConcluded that the sellers steered customers to the more expensive LCD systems.

"Watch TV buyers, mass merchants, it is possible to obtain the survived with a favorable price and may not expert advice. However, television buyers should be aware that the lower prices they find at mass merchants are mainly the fact that most of these transactions to the second category brand TV rather than carry major brands such as Sony or Panasonic. If the price of a particularTV model is compared with every type of retailer, the prices are remarkably similar, "JD Power, Larry Wu.

HDTV video format: 1080p, 1080i or 720p: the higher number is better, right? Although technically 1080i has higher resolution, it is not the obvious choice. Most networks have opted for the 1080i format, because it offers higher resolution, while ABC, Fox, ESPN, and National Geographic Channel, the smoother the images are selected from 720p. 1080i will be delivered inInterlaced format (the "old" format), which means that your TV set draws each frame in two passes: once for the straight horizontal lines and a second pass for the odd lines.

The 720p (progressive format is the standard in Europe) less lines of resolution as 1080i, but delivers images that are slightly softer look than the interlaced image, especially when a lot of movement on the screen, such as sports.

The new king is 1080p, which the best of both worlds. Progressive Scanwith a higher resolution. Little programming is currently in 1080p, but 1080p systems should be able to convert 1080i source material into a 1080p image.

Source of Programming

One of the options was to buy a DVD player, a lot easier recently. Blu-Ray became the de facto choice with the withdrawal of the alternative, HD-DVD. The other option, which must be made is: satellite, cable or terrestrial programming. A fourth choice, IPTV, the television is onThe Internet can not be summarily dismissed.

More than 100 million U.S. households can receive from their HDTV cable system, and all of the top 100 cable markets in the country available HDTV programming. Unfortunately, most of the leading cable provider only a few of the 50 + HDTV networks. While HDTV local channel selection is generally better than cable satellite, the major satellite companies offer more national HDTV channels than almost any cable provider. By the year 2010 60% of theU.S. households are using a satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

IPTV is not available throughout the country. Currently, if it is available, IPTV offers usually around 25 HDTV channels.

Audio Subsystem

The audio component of the HDTV system is very important. George Lucas (Star Wars) once said that audio is half of the movie viewing experience. Most HDTV programming now includes more than two channels (stereo) audio. The most popular programming in Dolby Digital-encoded5.1, which has) five full-bandwidth channels and a subwoofer channel (for earthquake effects.

Surround speakers would be two front speakers contain as much distance as possible from the monitor, two speakers on the back of the room, a center channel above or below the TV, that provides most of the dialogue, and the subwoofer on the floor for the low-frequency bass. Subwoofers are multidirectional, so you can put anywhere in the room.

If we are to maximize the impactOur wall mount system, we want to use in wall and / or in the ceiling. This leads to a cosmetically challenging installation.

System interconnect (wiring)

The cable used is important, but it is important to know what they prioritize over the cable. It is spending for consumers with a large amount of money for cable, lead but for the wrong reasons, and still in a lower performance.

In order to fully exploit high-definition programming (HDTV), either coaxialComponent cable (red, blue and green, sometimes referred to as "RGB")), a Digital Visual Interface (DVI) cable, or a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable is required. This is in contrast to the red, yellow and white composite (RCA) cable, or using the round-ended S-Video cable with standard-definition TV.

An HDMI is the preferred pick for the ultimate audio and video quality. Look at the back of the TV and you will see several options. Depending elected by the unit, you may have toThese cables sold separately. Cables can be expensive. If you have large selection on the basis of price, you can be circumvented your choice with the need for separate cable purchase.

The cables are one of the details that may be poorly chosen and lead to an overall unsatisfactory experience. Details are important.

Installation Decisions

Choose the correct installation. This will be decided by the size and shape of the room. An ideal wall is at least twice theWidth of the display, because you should have a minimum distance for acoustic separation for the front speakers. Choose a place where the ambient light, especially opposite minimized from the screen.

Some HDTV models, the manufacturers offer a special mount for your setup. Plan for about $ 250 for the bracket. If a system promotes "VESA compliant" or "VESA mount, VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association, and the display is to work withVESA standard dampers. If not, look at the back of the display and check the screw threaded inserts, to which a mount can be attached. A minimum of four screws inserts required. Tilt wall mounts allow the user to change the angle of the display, and can contribute to glare from ambient light.

A wall mount on an exterior wall is probably more difficult than the installation on an interior wall. Exterior walls typically offer more obstacles, including the insulation, as internalWalls. Exterior walls can be built with fire-blocks. These horizontal braces or blocks are found usually about halfway up the wall, and significantly increase the difficulty of passing the wiring from your device to the display.

Decide if the wires inside the wall or on the outside. They should not be in the power cord into a wall as they are against NEC (National Electric Code), except when performed by a professional electrician. If you opt for the cable on the install processoutside the wall, there are cable management raceways are available at your local DIY store, the lock on the wall with a blanket in place attached. If the wires are on the inside of the wall is a keyhole drywall must be executed, can saw or a knife to cut holes in the rock sheet.

A good idea is to give a molding to create to be used as a cover for the cables. If the power cord (s) are outside the wall, then the reasons for the operationthe other (signal) lines is reduced in the wall. Select either a cable tray that matches the wall paint or covering. It looks very natural and will consider it to be easier than plug into the wall.

The right HDTV hardware, the best sources of the programs, an awesome audio subsystem, the proper electrical connections and well-chosen installation decisions leads to a great theater system. Now, get the popcorn.
