Wonderful speakers!

Review Date: January 31, 2008
Reviewer: Peter A. Oliphant, Las Vegas, NV
I'll just confirm and add a little bit to what everyone else has said about these truly great speakers. They sound great, first and foremost. They feel very solid, like they are made entirely of metal (a good thing!). In fact, while many systems sport satellite speakers weighing around 2 pounds (USA), these weigh closer to 3 pounds.

The image on the Amazon page for these speakers does not do them at all justice! The base speaker is very big, looks like a fine price of furniture, and could possible sub as a side-table (but don't do it...hehe)!

I have mine connected to a Denon AVR-1908 receiver. I mention this because it took me a few days to figure the best setup for these speakers, and I want to mention some pointers. My receiver allows choosing between 'small' and 'large' when it comes to the front, back, and center speakers. For these speakers, set them all to 'small'.

But, most importantly, be sure the sub-woofer is turned on on your receiver! I used the system for a couple of days before I realized the bass speaker was not on! That's because the front speakers were set to 'large', so they took up the task of filling in the missing bass (so it was hard to notice the bass wasn't on). I figured out how to turn the bass on in the receiver, and - WHOA! - the entire room shook!

Which brings me to a special pointer - you can tell if the bass speaker is getting a signal by the COLOR of the light on top! If it is off, there is no power. If it is yellow, it is on, but no signal (or too low a signal to register if low volume). Blue means on and there is a signal!

So, in conclusion, these speakers are awesome for the price! Speaking of which, the price of Amazon fluctuates for this item more than the stock market! I have seen it go up and down on the same day as much as fifty or even two hundred dollars! So monitor the price and strike when it is low (I got mine for LESS than four hundred dollars!).
It rocks w/ the HK AVR245 receiver

I bought these speakers because I wanted to go a step forward in the experience of enjoying movies at home and replaced my old Sony home theater system. I also bought the Harman Kardon AVR245 receiver to match the speakers. The result is amazing. I use my mac mini as media center and have it connected to the AVR245 with an optical audio cable and the result is great. I fully recommend this product and if you can match it with an Harman Kardon receiver, then you'll have an incredible sound for less than $1000.
Great speaker package!

The speakers sound great with my HD DVD and Blu-ray players. Incredible bass. Consider setting up your A/V with front and surround speakers set to "large" - that works great with my Sony amp. The surround speakers look especially good when installed in a corner due to their triangular shape. I was a bit sceptical when I read that it came with its own mounting hardware (espcially since I already had universal mounting that I could use), but it was easy to install, and looks/works great. I also purchased the H/K stands for the front speakers, which also look great. All-in-all, this is quality through-and-through.
Great Purchase

Review Date: December 22, 2007
Reviewer: P. Stephen,
I told myself when I purchased this system that I would write a review on it. I just received the HKTS 18 system today and have played a few things on it now. This system replaced some Sony towers and bookshelf speakers which were purchaed around 5 years ago. To set this up, I am running a Harman Kardon AVR 635 receiver that pushes around 75 watts per channel.

Positives: This system is absolutely beautiful. I had never seen these speakers in the store, but upon receiving them from UPS today, the individual surrounds are just about the perfect size and have a great weight to them, which shows quality. I am usually one who likes to take the grills off to feel the quality of the woofers and mids, but these don't come off, which I'm willing to accept. The subwoofer is a 10 inch, piano finished beauty. It looks like a piece of art in the corner. I played the Bourne Ultimatium and the sound was absoultey superb. Everything sounded absolutely realistic and I was amazed that such small speakers could produce such good sound. Outside of movies, I played some mucic from my media player. I noticed that if you place the sub woofer in a part of the room which you are not near, the blend of the bass seamlessly fills the room. It is just fantastic.

Negtives: The first thing that stood out is that the sub woofer is open faced on the bottom, meaning that it is suseptible to damage. There is no grill underneath to protect it which I found a little shocking. Though I also think the shiny piano finish on the woofer is very nice, it can be easily scratched almost like the old black ipods. As for the surrounds, I actually don't have any complaints.

Overall for the $400 to purchase, these speakers just rock over my old Sony towers. I think having a Harman receiver and matching home theater speaker set goes a long way. This is a good purchase.
Great speakers and vaule

The sound is actually better than some of the Bose speakers I've heard at a fraction of the cost. I spent 12 times as much for another set of surround speakers and the difference between that and this Harmon Kardon set is not huge. I highly recommend these speakers.

Excellent receiver

Review Date: September 8, 2009
Reviewer: Andrew Philip, Massachusetts, USA
This receiver is a Marantz slim line model and it is about 4" tall. I bought this to replace a Sony STRG810. It was a toss up between a Denon, Yamaha or Marantz. The Sony STRG810 was a great receiver for movies but it was lacking sound quality in the music department (too much reverb). When comparing similar models, Yamaha was brighter then Denon, and Marantz was warmer then Denon, so I went with Marantz. I compared the Marantz NR1501 model to a Marantz SR6004 ($1300) side by side, and the audio quality was almost the same except the SR6004 was a bit more full at 110 watts per channel. I also compared the Marantz NR1501 to a Harmon Kardon AVR254 and the Marantz NR1501 sounded much better. The Harmon Kardon sounded too digital and tinny where the Marantz sounded true to its source. I am very pleased with how warm and clear the sound quality is while listening to music or watching movies.

The 50 watt NR1501 is more then enough wattage to power my reference series Klipsch speakers in a 13' x 17' living room. You may think that 50 watts is too low, but Marantz rates their receivers lower then what they are capable of. For example, Sony rates their receivers by putting a meter in the center of a testing room and increasing the volume as loud as it can go - distortion and all; they mark down what the wattage output is. Marantz does the same procedure except once they get to distortion, they back the knob off a little and mark down the wattage rating. That is why you will notice a lot of Marantz receivers are rated at 50,70, or 90 watts which is a lot lower then some of the 100,110 watt competition.

I usually set all the parameters (crossover frequency, speaker distance, db level etc.) by ear as I have with every receiver I have purchased. I wanted to see how well this receiver does with auto calibration, so I ran it. The receiver comes with a microphone so I put it on a camera tripod, put it up to the listening position, and ran the auto cal procedure. It lasted about 3 minutes and played a series of test tones. When it was done, all of the levels were adjusted to the listening position. I manually went through these levels to see how well it did.

The only one I had to adjust was the crossover frequency. It set my center channel frequency to 170hz and my surround speaker channel to 90hz. Therefore, any frequency below these settings will be sent to my subwoofer. With the center channel frequency set so high, this will add some bass from the subwoofer when people are talking (since the main job of a center channel speaker is to do the vocals in a soundtrack). I would rather the bass from the vocals come from the center channel speaker itself. Therefore, the number would have to be much lower then 170hz. I read in various Dolby Digital and THX forums that they use a standard of 80hz for 3"-5" drivers which I have always been happy with. You get a more full sound from your speakers with just enough bass from the subwoofer.

For the price, simply the best sounding receiver

Reviewer: W. Schmidt, Philadelphia, PA United States
I just upgraded my home theater system from a five year old HTIB. I picked up Orb Audio speakers (excellent little speakers, great price) and also the Marantz NR-1501.

I tried out three receivers before settling on the NR-1501. I first looked at the Denon 1910. It definitely sounded great, but was too tall for the space in my entertainment center.

I ended buying a Yamaha RX-V465 BL. I was disappointed with the clarity of the vocals during movies and TV, and even with adjustment the sound was very harsh and very directional. I took this back to best buy.

I listened to an Onkyo TX-SR507. This had decent sound quality, balanced, but not as smooth as the Denon. It also fit in my entertainment center, and the price was decent.

Finally I ended up checking out the NR1501. I thought it wouldn't sound particularly great due to the lower power (50W per channel), but apparently Marantz greatly underrates their equipment and cuts off the rating before any distortion occurs.

Whatever the reason, in any event, this receiver had the smoothest, cleanest and clearest sounding tone of all of them. I tried it side by side, with the same speakers in the store VS. the Denon and the Onkyo (forget the Yamaha, it sounded like garbage compared to all three) and was continually amazed by how rich and clear everything sounded.

I went with the Marantz--at 599.00 (current Amazon price) you can't even come close to this quality of sound. The volume can be so low that my wife can sleep with the door open, and you can still clearly discern the voices of people on TV when using the amp. Everything balances great. Dark Side of the Moon and OK Computer sparkled with this setup (my two main reference CD's for sound).

To sum that up, get it. Unless you're dropping 1500 for a receiving I don't think you can beat the quality of this. As long as you have smaller speakers and reasonable sized room, this is the deal.
Best receiver for those with size constraints

Review Date: December 13, 2009
Reviewer: T. Lewis, SF Bay Area
This is a great receiver for its size. I only had about 6 inches of height in my cabinet so this was one of the few choices. At only 4.25 inches tall it fits with enough space for adequate air circulation. If you have more space, I think you can find better value for your money. This option was cheaper than new furniture in order to fit a standard 6" or larger receiver. There are inevitable compromises due to space, but the sound is much better than my old Sony that died after 10 years.

The 50 watts is more than enough for my 10 x 20 room with satellites and a sub. YMMV if you have some power pig towers etc.
Fantastic Sounding Receiver for the Price

Review Date: February 20, 2010
Reviewer: S. Crow, So. California, USA
Purchased this receiver after spending a considerable amount of time putting together a home theatre system. Listened many receivers and actually purchased a Harman Kardon 255 from Amazon. For the price the Marantz NR 1501 blew all of these away - it has a great feature set and works very reliably. My main criteria for home theatre was to listen to music and then movies second. Musically it is awesome with a warm detailed sound - the HK 255 sounded like listening to music in a metal pipe - even my wife noticed how bad the HK 255 sounded. For other comparisons I would say it is just a notch below the sound quality of my previous amp a NAD 302 - which was built just for music and is truly awesome. For movies, which we watch a lot of, it doesn't disappoint with plenty of power to fill our family room/ kitchen area (14 x 28 ft). Volume goes from 1 - 100 and listening to movies in the 50 - 60 range is pretty loud and that is from the Playstation PS3 which is a little on the low side when it comes to volume output. I have it matched to B&W M1s up front and a pair of Orb Audios in the rear with a REL T2 sub.

Features wise it is excellent with enough HDMI inputs for my setup. HDMI video is passed through nicely with no loss of video quality from my PS3 as far as I can tell. The setup onscreen display (OSD) is fairly basic but has all you need without a lot of features you don't really need. OSD is basic text on the TV (no overlaying here like fancier models) but really that is not important as once you have everything set up you rarely need to go back into the OSD - remember this is an audio device to create great sound not a video device. On the whole the OSD is comparable to the HK 255 and it allows you to name each input however you are limited to only 8 characters. HD audio works great from the PS3 using 5.1 channel PCM streams over HDMI - I don't have a dedicated Blu-Ray player so I can't comment on bitstreamed versions DTS and Dolby True HD - but through the PS3 HD audio worked and sounded fantastic. I often like to just listen to streamed radio through the PS3 and unfortunately when the audio goes through HDMI the TV has to be on otherwise it does not work. The only other alternative is to send the sound from the PS3 via Digital Optical but this format does not support HD Audio. Not sure if this shortcoming is due to the HDMI specifications or just a particular quirk of the NR 1501.

Setup is fairly straight forward with the included microphone. I ended up tweaking all the values manually in the end to get the balance just where I wanted it. All the usual crossover frequencies, volumes and distances as you would expect. I think there is also a feature where you can have more than one setup and switch between the two (say for Movies and Music) however don't quote me on that. I am sure Marantz publishes the manual online somewhere so you can read up on it.

The remote is OK and I like the feel of it. A big plus is that there is just about a button for every feature you would likely change on a day to day basis. Such as lip-sync, fake surround mode when there is just a stereo signal (receiver supports the latest Dolby and NEO fake surround modes which actually work very well - say when listening to 2 channel TV). The receiver will default to playing in the best surround mode possible - if it only receives a 2 channel signal then it will the pick whatever mode you selected for that input in the setup (such as Neo Movie or simply 2 channel etc). The biggest shortfall of the remote was that the built in presets for controlling other equipment were somewhat lacking (or out of date) it could not control our 2008 Samsung LCD at all (which means 2 remotes - argh!). I solved this by buying a SR 5003/4 remote on eBay which has true learning capability - problem solved - it could learn any function of our other remotes and for the most part has the same buttons / layout as the 1501 remote.

The feature I would have liked in this receiver would be Dolby Volume or the equivalent Audyssey Dynamic Volume found on the SR-5004. So if you want a bit more power and have space in your wallet and house definitely consider the SR - 5004 as well. Finally I picked up my NR-1501 at a local store in So.California - Ken Cranes - for $500 including tax which was a great deal and what you should expect to pay for this unit.

Just what I wanted.

Review Date: May 14, 2009
Reviewer: D. Miller, Mariposa, CA USA
Bought a Samsung LN52A650 before xmas which I thoroughly love and have been debating what audio to match it up with. Blu-ray and 5.1 were a must but buying both a player and 5.1 amp plus matching speakers/subwoofer can get pretty spendy. TA-DA...this thing shows up. Not being 5.1 savvy before this I wasn't prepared for the rear speakers to pretty much stay quiet but when they get the right feed its awesome.

My set up:
DirecTV HDDVR hdmi to the LN52A650 for broadcast TV.
BD1250 hdmi to LN52A650 for BD/DVD/CD/IPod/Pandora/FM/camera/etc.
Network cables wired direct from DSL modem to BD1250, LN52A650 and HDDVR. (The wife loves Pandora...check out their website if you love music and aren't familiar with them.)
Optical audio from DirecTV HDDVR to HT-BD1250 if I want to listen to 5.1 from DirecTV. Note: It says in the LN52A650 documents that going from it to another audio system is always at best "stereo" no matter what type of connector you use. The heck with that ...I went optical from the HDDVR to the 1250. Ratatooie via StarzHD sounds 5.1 fantastic.

This new setup let me "retire" my old Sony "stereo only" amp, an old Panasonic CD player, a Panasonic "progressive" DVD player and a couple of tall Sony speakers. (That stuff is now hooked up and rockin' in the garage.) The vacated shelf space is now occupied by perfect sized wicker baskets that my wife found that are holding much of our DVD collection.

I still use the 3 remotes because I haven't figured out how to get all the functionality I need without them. I usually watch ESPN so, as I've always done, I hit the "ON" button on the DirecTV remote and it fires up the TV and the HDDVR. I left the speakers on the TV set to "on" so on start up the broadcast TV sound comes over them. Note: The DirecTV remote will turn the HT-BD1250 on if you set it up but you have to move the switch at the top, etc., etc....pain in the butt.

At first having to use one of the Samsung remotes to fire up the 1250 bothered me but I've changed my mind. The reason? We have TV watching visitors from time to time so for them to just plop down, hit the DirecTV "ON" button and start watching "without" the surround sound booming away is my preference. The LN52A650's speakers are good enough. What's cool is that if they pop in a disc it automatically fires up the 5.1 and the TV speakers shut down. If you want to listen to a broadcast over 5.1 just hit tools and select the 1250 for sound.

The "Any-Net" feature enables the 1250 to be available for use from many of the menus on the Samsung remotes. Also the volume can be adjusted by any of the remotes, including the DirecTV remote. Pretty easy!

And last but not least hitting the "Off" button on the DirecTV remote shuts the HDDVR, LN52A650 AND the BD1250 off. Apparently the "Any-Net" talking between the TV and the 1250 must tell it to take a break too. I really like that...no one can inadvertantly leave the amp on.

Question to any of you with a similar TV and Blu-ray. I'm not really seeing any "dramatic" difference between the 1080i HD stuff I get off the dish (which is stunning by the way)and a blu-ray movie. Should there be?
This system is worth its money. Entertainment at its best!

This system is worth its money. Entertainment at its best!!! I am tired of people nit-picking the smallest of issues. I rate this sound system based off of the sound and picture that it can display for the cost of the money. It is more than worth the cost of the money, even with the small issues that some people have mentioned. I have friends that have Bose and other $2000 to $3000 systems and they all agree with one thing when they hear my system... that they overpaid and it was NOT worth it. The sound is excellent, along with the Blu-ray... but most of all the up-converting of regular DVD's is excellent. Samsung did a great job. I am not into the other features such as ipod and the internet, so I am not rating those features. I bought this to listen to and to watch movies with my Samsung b650 plasma TV, not to play on the internet. Well done Samsung!!! And the people that complain about the wireless connection to Netflix or Pandora..., please keep in mind... wireless is never perfect and never will be perfect. Hardwire it and it will always be perfect. Again, well done Samsung!
Nice compact system to sync with Samsung TV

Review Date: June 7, 2009
Reviewer: H. Tam, Los Angeles
This neat little unit had a nice feature that syncs with newer Samsung TV controls like volume (probably through HDMI and optical speaker in/out). The only drawback to that is the online media software slow startup.
The actual player unit is deeper than expected (doesn't quite fit on my 12" shelf), but that's to accomodate the power and switching necessary for speaker system.
Speakers are small enough for 1000W theatre sound, but system won't make the stage bounce (ok, since this is for older parents' large living room). That said, the sub is not square cube, but taller and narrower, which makes sub conveniently fit behind TV. Speakers have cheap shiny plastic grill that doesn't lend itself to "hide" very well (matte finish might have been better). Proprietary speaker connectors to player unit are small and should have been standard speaker wire connectors (going to have to splice for large gauge with more wire strands).
Don't do the firmware update and you have a great unit!

I had to write this review since all the last reviews have totally trashed this unit based on a firmware update. I bought mine from QVC back in the summer and I've had absolutely no problems with it AT ALL. The sound is amazing! The blu-ray movies are crystal clear. It functions with the anynet mode on my Samsung 50 inch plasma TV and my PS3 flawlessly. I use one remote to turn everything on and off. I will say that I never hooked up the internet to the system, which apparently was the downfall of all these naysayers when prompted for a firmware update. Since I had no internet connection, I have never been prompted for a firmware update. I see no reason for an update when everything works perfectly! I'm not sure why Samsung still has that update out there since it's caused a lot of problems, but if you're not going to be using the Netflix streaming option or Pandora then don't be hesitant about buying this theater system. Just don't hook up a wireless or hard cabled internet connection to it and you won't have the problems most of these folks on here have had. I couldn't be happier with mine! I'd buy it again in a heartbeat! I needed to balance out the reviews on here because the system is getting a really bad rap for a bad firmware update when in reality it's a kick butt system!

I have been looking to purchase a home theater system for a few months now and finally decided this was the one to go with.

I was looking at a Sony theater, thinking to replace the 5 CD/DVD player with a separate Blu-ray player and then thought, I might as well get a Samsung Blu-ray theater.

With it's Anynet technology for Samsung components, just turning on the player will turn on the TV, and switch it's HDMI to whatever connection the Blu-ray is on. I know that Sony's Bravia components do the same as well, but not sure of Panasonic, LG, etc.

Anyway, connecting the wires from the Blu-ray player to the speakers are fool-proof, as the male connectors are all color coded to the back of the Blu-ray player. The wires going into the woofer and speakers are pretty standard, so nothing new here.

Our first movies on the Blu-ray theater system were UP! and Star Trek. Both movies were amazing to see in HD and I could not believe how sharp the images were. Prior to the Blu-ray player, we had a Samsung 1080p upconvert DVD player. And let me tell you, what an upgrade!

I found that the internet ready features such as Pandora, Netflix, YouTube and Blockbuster are awesome as well. I had some problems hooking up my Comcast modem to my router, so if you have problems, let me know. But after figuring all that out, we use Pandora constantly now through the Blu-ray system. We had it before and was just broadcasting by phone, but now that it's tied in through the Blu-ray system, it's awesome! Netflix was something we just signed up for because of the Blu-ray system, and it is very convenient to stream movies to the system. The movies available to watch via streaming, however, was very limited (the new releases are not available to stream). We're just waiting more Blu-ray discs to show up to use the system to it's potential.

The price was fair among the Blu-ray home theater systems. One thing I did before we purchased this was went to Best Buy to see the unit in person and played around with the features. I wasn't too impressed by the iPod connection because you have to page down through the list of artist, or song, or album just to get where you want - a typing feature would be great, though.

All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase. As with all feedback, this is my opinion. Do yourself a favor and go to an electronics store to check this out (or other systems) before buying.
